The uncomfortable truth
I am not sure how to say this but may I speak to you about something that made me uncomfortable.
In a room full of people, you casually shared that you were in a country that was still very backward. You may not know this. But this country that you call backward was plundered of its riches and it’s people oppressed for hundreds of years by the people that came from your country.
When you disparage a country in a room full of people who look like you even if you intended for it to be a joke, you further reinforced the inferiority of others with little context of how your history played a part in this.”
Truth is uncomfortable. But ignorance is no excuse to racism. Fronting the uncomfortable truth and the impact it has on generations of people is a step forward to healing.
History is often written by victors but the future is crafted by the reformers.
