3 career lessons
I shared 3 stories and lessons learned from my career in last night’s Association of Chinese Accountants Australia (ACAA) Panel Event.
🔸1st story “When I first started work in Australia, no matter how hard I work I still missed out on promotions.”
I learned to think of what is my one headline achievement each year to convince those who are making promotion decision that I too should be promoted.
🔸2nd story “I love kids and had kids early in my career. What I did not expect was the bias I faced as a working parent including being told by a senior person to find another job.”
I learned to keep growing my skills no matter how small and invest in myself. These skills add up to where I found myself today and my future roles.
🔸3rd story “I pursued a high profile role only to walk away from a promotion. My mental health was suffering and I felt like a failure even though on the outside I looked like I was on top of my game.”
I learned to live my own dream and happiness, not someone else’s. Every day now my motivation to do what I do in my career comes from within as I found my purpose.
