Promotion: what message are you promoting?
There were more people vying for promotion than spots available. The competition just felt intense. Some felt that they need to step on others to succeed, dropped subtle criticism in front of the leaders to make the others looked incompetent.
When the promotion was announced, all was surprised. The one most competitive did not win the race. But the one that was a team player did.
Someone asked why?
To promote one that would step on others to succeed, we have to ask what damage would we inflict on the culture of the organization.
The bigger question to ask is whether the person who is promoted has inspired and earned the trust of their peers.
Ask ourselves what message are we promoting to the team when we promote someone.
